Finding out about what financial help is available to you if you have a child with a disability is not easy! There are different government departments involved.

Here are some of the main ones:

Department of Social & Family Affairs

Domiciliary Care Allowance Domiciliary Care Allowance is a monthly payment to the carer of a child with a disability so severe that it requires care and attention and/or supervision substantially in excess of another child of the same age.
Respite Care Grant The Respite Care Grant is an annual payment made to carers by the Department of Social and Family Affairs (DSFA) in Ireland.
Disability allowance Disability Allowance is a weekly allowance paid to people with a disability who are between 16 and 65 years of age.
Carer's Benefit

Carer's Benefit is a payment made to insured persons (i.e. have sufficient PRSI contributions) in Ireland who leave the workforce to care for a person(s) in need of full-time care and attention.

You can get Carer's Benefit for a total period of 104 weeks for each person being cared for.

Carer's Allowance

Carer's Allowance is a payment to people living in Ireland who are looking after someone who is in need of support because of age, physical or learning disability or illness, including mental illness.

Carer's Allowance is a means tested payment.

Department of Education and Science

Home tuition programme

The programme provides funding to parents to provide education at home for children who (for a number of reasons such as chronic illness), are unable to attend school. The scheme is also available to children with special educational needs who are awaiting a suitable educational placement.

The programme also provides funding for home tuition for preschool children on the autistic spectrum who need early educational intervention.

Revenue

Incapacitated Child Tax Credit The Incapacitated Child Tax Credit can be claimed by a parent/guardian of a child in Ireland who is permanently incapacitated, either physically or mentally.
Medical Expenses Tax Relief If you pay medical expenses that are not covered by the State or by private health insurance, you may claim tax relief on some of those expenses
