InTouch Magazine June 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Sharon O'Driscoll, Coachford NS, Co. Cork

"Each book centers on an everyday event, such as Going Swimming, telling a simple story in a sequence of twelve steps. This pattern, along with clear illustrations and easy to follow print contribute to a format which is both informative and reassuring. The books are primarily designed to be used as a springboard for discussion to help a child cope and prepare for a new situation. However, older children would also enjoy reading the books and they would be a very beneficial EAL resource helping children develop language and build vocabulary.
I think this series of books would be a very useful resource in infant classrooms as well as for resource, learning support and EAL teachers."

I heard about your story and I looked at your website. I have since ordered your books and they are excellent.

I have been teaching for twenty five years and have been searching for books like these. At the moment I am a Language Support Teacher and these books are invaluable. For a lot of children learning English many of the easier readers are too basic and have quite basic words. These books are clear and can be used with older pupils without them complaining about "baby books" as they refer to other books. I will pass this information to other language teachers and resource teachers.

Well done and continued success. I feel like I know Stephen already. You are an inspirational family.

St. Vincents School, Lisnagry, Limerick PDF Print E-mail

"There is a clarity, brevity and fun element in these books which attracts the reader to them again and again. These books are favourites with the pupils in my class. They lead to enjoyment of reading; to greater understanding of the sequential routines of everyday activities and ultimately to greater independence. The students find them a great model for role playing. The clock symbol while teaching necessary patience can also aid the child to become more familiar with the hour on the clock. I am looking forward to the next set in the series.

Thank you Avril."

"I teach the 4-12 year olds with special needs in the International School of Brussels. Lara Alsen showed me the books you wrote for your son and we are now going to order a full set for my class. They are fabulous! They are perfect for the students I work with, and resemble social stories I sometimes write.
I just wanted to let you know how beneficial to all of us these books are. They are a GREAT way of preparing children for things to come (shopping, plane rides, (train rides?), dentist visits…). My students’ parents are going to love them!"

Just a quick message to say thanks for writing all your books. They are great. I am a resource teacher and I am using them with a child that has learning difficulties. For such kids its great to have books that are easy enough to read but are also age appropriate as they are connected to real life experiences.
