The characters used in the Off We Go! series come from different ethnic backgrounds and some of the characters have disabilities. It is important that we show that all children have their part to play in their community and that we are all different. I hope that by showing characters that are, for example, wheelchair users that this will generate a conversation perhaps at home or in school about the fact that not everybody’s legs work. It is important to give children the opportunity to discuss disability. Also the same characters go to the various places like ‘going swimming’ or ‘going to the cinema’ so that you get to know the ‘family’ of characters. This helps with learning and familiarity.
